To participate in the provision of a comprehensive range of scientific and diagnostic services for cardiac physiology. The diagnostic work of the cardiac physiology department is varied and includes performing standard physiological tests, processing samples, undertaking physiological measurement & equipment testing.
To maintain accurate clinical/technical records in relation to activities carried out.
To work as an independent member of the team with supervision from cardiac physiologists. May be required to supervise, organise and allocate work and/or train less experienced staff in own area.
To complete a training programme to include a level 2 apprenticeship in Healthcare Science.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Knowledge, training and experience
• Effective management of simple day to day situations and problems, referring to senior staff when appropriate.
• Works in cooperation with team to ensure workload is processed in a timely and efficient manner and that that departmental performance targets are met by continually assessing priority of work.
• Ensures the timely and efficient provision of cardiac physiology service.
• To undertake diagnostic tests such as ECG monitoring, assisting with cardiac stress tests & assisting in tilt testing.
• To undertake venepuncture and cannulation as required for investigation.
• To always maintain the highest standards of patient care, ensuring comfort and dignity of patient during investigative procedure.
• Ability to recognise ECG abnormalities.
• Escalate patients presenting with conditions that may be potentially dangerous or a cause for concern to the appropriate clinical staff.

• Ensure the safe disposal waste and to ensure cleaning and maintenance of work areas and equipment is carried out in accordance with SOP.
• To ensure that work is carried out in line with Standing Operational Procedures and/or Departmental police.
• Complies with the requirement to practice within information governance, data protection and confidentiality guidelines.
Communication and relationship skills
• Provides and receives information, and communicates effectively via all communication routes with patients, carers, wider team and departments of the organisation.
• Provides and receives sensitive information from patients and their representatives where empathic skills are required.
• Performs telephone duties that include making and receiving calls from and to the laboratory, verbally transmitting confidential results and conveying sensitive information and advice to healthcare professionals.
• To at all times respect patient confidentiality and, in particular, the confidentiality of electronically stored personal/manual data in line with trust and statutory requirements.
• Input, retrieval and checking of patient information using EPIC/ESR.
• To ensure that statutory and Trust requirements for record keeping are met.
Financial, resource and personnel management
• Maintain equipment used to a clean and serviceable standard, reporting faults where necessary.
• Effectively maintain stock control, place orders and take appropriate timely action as require.
• To undertake regular stock check and audit as require.
• To implement cost improvement programmes as directed by senior cardiac physiology staff.
• Provides supervision, training support and assistance to newly staff as appropriate.
• To carry out appraisal of HCS assistants as directed by senior cardiac physiology staff.
Education and Training
• Undertake and complete Healthcare Science Assistant Apprenticeship (Level 4) with CSR Scientific Training.
• To complete necessary training for the scope of professional practice.
• To develop IT skills and training courses as required, in line with Trust development
• Participates in the annual Personal Development Programme and works towards identified development needs.
• Attend all mandatory training course.
• Attends and participates in departmental and Trust-wide staff meetings as appropriate and demonstrates a positive attitude.
Health & Safety and Risk
• Demonstrate knowledge of national and local health and safety standard.
• Decontamination of working areas and equipment according to SOP’.
• Aware of Clinical Governance, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and local Health and Safety policies, reporting problems, errors or breaches to Senior staff.
• Practices safe movement of patients and equipment.
• To identify and report immediately any untoward accident, incident or potential hazard.
• Compliance with local fire and manual handling procedures.
General
• To undertake any other duties which may be required, which are consistent with the nature and grade of the post.
• Displays and maintains an appropriate level of IT skills.
• Performs a range of administrative tasks in all sections of the department as required.
• Occasional exposure to biological hazards (blood).
• Regular requirement for intense concentration for long periods of time at technically demanding procedures.
